Summary This case is a description of method used in a study on farmers' suicides in Maharashtra, India. Since this is a sensitive topic, the study tried to incorporate multiple perspectives by being open to suggestions from different views. It shows how the available data on suicides and population from different sources were combined to arrive at an estimate of suicide mortality rate for farmers and non-farmers. It also explains the survey design to capture risk factors associated with suicide incidence as also in making comparisons of suicide cases with controls
