*Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the following program contains images and voices of people who have died*We all know her as 'Cathy', an athletic wild cat ready to strike, but now a refocused 'Catherine' has found new energy running a foundation for Indigenous youth.On Talking Heads, Peter Thompson chats to Cathy/Catherine Freeman to find out how she's managed to refocus her energy since her stunning victory in the 400 metres at the Sydney Olympics."Once you achieve a certain level of success in one field, you sure as hell are going to be aiming for that same level of success in another," she says.Stepping away from the safe environment of elite athletics, Freeman admits she was lost for several years. She eventually realised that the way forward lay in drawing together some of the main threads in her own story - self-confidence, family and community. The Catherine Freeman Foundation's goal is to motivate and educate kids in Queensland's deprived community of Palm Island."It was always a matter of curiosity that brought me back to Palm Island and to where my mother was born. It's all with the view of enabling Indigenous kids to recognise their own worth, to recognise their ability, just the way in which I learned at an early age from my parents."Realising that the 'glare' of her fame could be harnessed for the benefit of others seems to have been a key revelation."The impact of that one moment has changed me forever.
