Description 1 online resource (21 min.)
Summary Ottawans love their beautiful city, but they also enjoy the many peaceful places outside their capital. Just a few minutes' drive from the city is the Capital Region and Gatineau Hills, filled with forests, hills, lakes, and acres of recreational pathways to explore. In the Capital Region we see the Rideau Canal System, which in summer is a mecca for boaters and in winter becomes the world's longest skating rink. We learn of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada's first French-speaking Prime Minister, known for winning the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize and for the creation of the United Nations peacekeeping force. We experience a Canada Day Celebration, where hundreds of thousands of people celebrate Canada's heritage on July 1st. In Gatineau Hills, we visit Pink Lake, which is actually green due to algae build-up; it provides an environment where rare forms of life can survive. Next to Gatineau Park, a nature reserve that follows a wall of ancient Canadian shield rock shaped by the passage of glaciers thousands of years ago; then we learn of the former Prime Minister, William Lyon MacKenzie King, known for supporting "national unity." Finally, we see the Wakefield Steam Train; in operation since 1907 it is one of the last steam-powered locomotives in Canada
