Summary Annotation The migrant community in the Ballarat gold fields of Australia is explored in this study of a makeshift boomtown that matured into an influential center for the development of technology, unionism, and national identity in the 19th century. The search for gold-bearing riverbeds and the speculative and thrifty financial undertakings of adventurers are analyzed to better understand the interaction of humans and the environment when there is so much to gain. The discussions of the Eureka rebellion of 1854 and the relationship of Ballarat and the fertile hinterlands that surrounded it help contextualize the history of the region in the national story
