Summary |
"Discharged from National Service in the navy in the 1950s, the young Colin Macleod was bored witless as a clerk. He sought adventure as a patrol officer in the Northern Territory. From Hermannsburg, Narwietooma and the Pintubi people to Wave Hill and the Gorinji people to Bathurst Island and the Tiwi people, patrol officer Macleod did the best that he could for the dispossessed indigenous peoples. He experienced it all at first hand, the squalor of the Blacks' camps on the fringes of the big cattle stations, the limbo status of the Yellafellas, the Myalls, the prosecution of Whites who flogged Blacks, the sexual exploitation of part-Aboriginal children now known as 'the stolen generation'. This is not a book by some southern academic theorist. It is a first hand report of a young worker in the field. It is always confronting, sometimes funny and sometimes shocking. This is a must read for every Australian with a conscience. It doesn't ask us to feel guilty. It asks us to help find a better way."--Publisher |
