Contents Personal experiences -- Propaganda and recruitment -- Visual perspectives and narratives --
Summary Electronic reproduction of primary and secondary source documents relating to the first World War, from archives around the world. The documents are diverse in scope and offer a remarkable window on the lives and experiences of men and women during World War I. The collection is designed for both teaching and study, from undergraduate to research students and beyond. The Personal Experiences module includes personal collections, photographs, diaries, manuscripts, correspondence, postcards, sheet music, printed books, trench literature, journals, newspapers, official papers and ephemera. There are also a number of 3D image captures of wartime objects from museums and of a preserved trench system in Belgium. The Propaganda and Recruitment module contains a varied range of material, from aerial leaflets and atrocity propaganda to international posters, postcards, cartoons and political pamphlets, showcasing methods exploited in wartime progaganda and their paths of dissemination. Themes of recruitment, training and morale are also examined through items such as tribunal case files, Kitchener's papers, recruitment listings, training manuals and minute books of both parliamentary and local recruiting committees. The Visual Perspectives and Narratives module highlights international visual perspectives of the war, from photographs (official and personal), artwork, ephemera (including ration books, charity stamps and theatre programs), objects (including weapons, uniforms, souvenirs and transportation models) and film clips; also diaries, correspondence, rare printed material and commissioning documents relating to official British war artists. In addition to documenting soldiers' experiences, there is a wealth of material highlighting the role of women at home and abroad, the auxiliary services, and life on the Home Front
