Summary |
America comes out of the closet in this exuberant musical comedy based on real events. Small-town hustler Matty takes a Greyhound to Greenwich Village in search of homosexual fulfilment. There, he falls in love with Puerto Rican drag queen LaMiranda, who introduces him to the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar owned by Skinny Vinnie. It's the summer of love - but not if you're gay. The NYPD make regular raids on the bar and Matty lands in jail, where he meets moderate gay activist Ethan. He gets another taste of police harassment on the night of June 27, but this time the enraged drag queens fight back. Led by Vinnie's lover Bustonia, a riot breaks out which lasts for three days and sparks the birth of the Gay Rights movement. To the music of The Shangri-Las, Patti LaBelle and Judy Garland, Stonewall mixes outrageous lip-synching with glitter, romance and attitude |
