Summary UPSETTING NEWSFrom the MH17 tragedy to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, this month has thrown up some confronting news stories for kids to deal with. So it's no surprise to hear that some kids are struggling to cope with the things they've seen and heard recently. This week on BtN, we're dedicating our top story to helping kids through this potentially upsetting time. We have a discussion with kids and a specialist youth psychologist, to find out how to deal with all this devastating news.ASYLUM KIDSImagine if one day, two students from your school didn't turn up for class. They were asylum seekers, and you soon find out that immigration officers have taken them to a detention centre on the other side of the country. That's the situation one school found itself in recently. BtN talks to some kids from there who are determined to do everything they can to get their friends back.TEACHER RESOURCES INCLUDED Learning Areas -History/Historical Knowledge and Understanding/The Australian colonies The reasons people migrated to Australia from Europe and Asia, and the experiences and contributions of a particular migrant group within a colony Year 5Civics and Citizenship/Knowledge and Understanding/Citizenship, diversity and identity The obligations citizens may consider they have beyond their own national borders as active and informed global citizens Year 6WEB SECRETSMost kids use the internet, but how many are 100% open with their parents about what they do on there? A recent study has found the majority of kids now hide some of their online actions from their parents. BtN looks at the reasons why some Aussie kids want their parents to log out of their lives, and why other see a benefit in it.WWI CENTENARYThis week marks 100 years since the start of Australia's involvement in the First World War. At the time, very few people realised just how big an impact it would have on our country and the people that fought in it.
