In 1988, Eva Sam immigrated to the United States with her family from Macao. Coming from a long lineage of jewelry sellers and makers, Eva naturally took the same route and opened Popular Jewelry in the heart of New York’s Chinatown. Although business started out slow, one day, the rap gods shined down upon the store. After Wu-Tang Clan’s Cappadonna visited, hip-hop stars like Beyoncé, Travis Scott, Macklemore and A$AP Rocky began to follow. Today, hip-hop’s “gold mother” has become a staple in the music community, and is lovingly known as A$AP Eva. This video is from the Human Condition collection of Great Big Stories
