Summary The dramatic and little-known struggle of the manufacturing industries in Australia in the middle of last century is very vividly portrayed in this true story of an old colonial woolen mill, the first in Victoria. The optimism and courage of these early pioneers in risking their capital in an entirely new industry in competition with strong and ruthless English opposition is very dramatically presented. Their efforts were to meet with failure, but the personal courage and ability of a delicate Yorkshireman. Godfrey Hirst, who left his home and family to seek health in the Colony of Victoria turned their failure to success, and two of the factories which failed in the nineties were restarted, and have run successfully through two generations.
