Summary The publication highlights the importance of a sense of place in decisions on development in our urban environment. It is particularly timely. As they enter the next century in a shrinking world, all our cities risk looking the same. Our need for an urban environment which is compatible with our cultural identity and for cities in which we can live in harmonious surroundings rather than desperately escaping from them is emphasised. At a time when the term 'sustainable development' is increasingly applied to our natural environment, we must also seek an urban development which is culturally sustainable. These are the proceedings of an Australian national workshop of experts, who explored the expression of cultural identity in urban development and the perception and treatment of the traditional fabric of our cities by planners, architects and heritage managers as well as by the people living in them
