Persécutés par le Pathet Lao (communistes laotiens), les Hmongs du Laos se réfugient en Thaïlande. A la fin des années 70, l'Etat français les "implantent" dans la forêt amazonienne, pour qu'ils produisent du riz. Ce peuple de tradition nomade est venu avec leurs graines, les a fait fructifier sur une terre réputée incultivable, jusqu'à devenir les principaux maraîchers de Guyane. Parmi les nombreux fruits exotiques, le pitaya, fruit étrange et coloré d'un cactus aux allures de dragon est devenu incontournable pour les Guyanais. Persecuted by the Pathet Lao (Laotian communists), the Hmongs of Laos took refuge in Thailand. At the end of the 1970s, the French State "established" them in the Amazonian forest, so that they would produce rice. This people of nomadic tradition came with their seeds, made them bear fruit on a land reputed to be uncultivable, until they became the main market gardeners in Guyana.
