| Summary |
On her first visit to the Christian Holy Land, Compass presenter, Geraldine Doogue, travels to Jerusalem for Easter Holy Week on a personal pilgrimage. Amidst many thousands of pilgrims from all over Christendom, Geraldine plunges into the greatest Christian commemoration of all - the celebration of Jesus' life and brutal death in the fabled city at the heart of Christian belief. In Holy Week, old Jerusalem floods with religious intensity.Geraldine's pilgrimage kicks off with the Palm Sunday procession from the Mount of Olives, remembering Jesus' famous entry into Jerusalem, on the back of a donkey. Geraldine visits the very busy Church of the Holy Sepulchre built over the site of Jesus' Crucifixion and then on to the Garden of Gethsemane only to find it too, is choked by religious tourists and noisy traffic... but it is beautiful.Her quest takes her on to the Cenacle - the site of 'The Last Supper' for the traditional Holy Thursday 'Washing of the Feet' ceremony conducted by the Franciscans. Geraldine finds the traditional service deeply moving.On Good Friday, Geraldine joins the throngs of faithful observing the 14 Stations of the Cross on the legendary Via Dolorosa. Confronted by the dense crowds packed into the tiny streets, Geraldine struggles up the hill while relating this emotional experience to her childhood as a young Christian growing up in Australia.On Easter Sunday, Geraldine returns to Jerusalem for the joyful dawn Resurrection Mass - conducted by a French order on the roof of Ecce Homo Convent.
