Summary |
The case discusses strategies taken by Entrepreneurs Associates (EA), a social enterprise in Nagaland, northeast India, to enhance entrepreneurship opportunities for youth in the state and in surrounding states. Neichute Doulo, EA's founder, faced several challenges as the local community perceived employment in government departments as the only sustainable and respectable job. Due to limited government job opportunities, social unrest in the state was also high. Under EA, Doulo established entrepreneurship training programs such as Basic Entrepreneurial Skills Training (BEST) and School of Life Values and Entrepreneurship (SOLVE) and tried to motivate youth to become entrepreneurs. Although Doulo was initially moderately successful, by December 2019, the locals in Nagaland still perceived government jobs as the preferred jobs, and only 10% showed interest in becoming entrepreneurs. These challenges are germane to the task of making EA more sustainable. In this case, students will act as a consultant to Doulo. What recommendations can the consultant make to Doulo to bring an entrepreneurship wave to the state of Nagaland? One dilemma that the consultant will need to resolve is whether Doulo should focus on the social or the impact of EA |
