Series Don't Tell My Mother That I Am In Venezuela ; Series 1, Episode 3
Summary Diego Bunel has travelled extensively as a foreign correspondent, reporting from countriesincluding Iraq, Afghanistan and the Congo. Before he would leave, he would always tell his production crew "Don't tell my mother I am in a dangerous place, it makes her really nervous." After years of travelling, covering news stories that only ever focused on the negatives, Diego decided a change of focus was needed. In this powerful, heartfelt series, Diego travels to some of the world's most troubled places, looking beyond the headlines to reveal the rich cultures and the true interests of the people.Oil and socialism are big exports in Venezuela. Diego steps into the heart of both in the capital city of Caracas before heading into the fields and mountains to meet folk getting on with life. Soon after arrival, Diego stumbles across a socialist protest where tense relations with the US over politics and oil are top of mind for participants. But while government-enforced low costs have made petrol unbelievably cheap for Venezuelans, regulations have caused massive food shortages.
