Summary To support Arctic shipping, quality infrastructure is needed. However, the importance of supporting infrastructure along the Arctic passage has been largely overlooked. For instance, the damage of the Churchill railway in 2017 has disrupted land connections to Churchill, curtailing all import and export of cargoes (e.g., wheat) via Hudson Bay and inflicting hardship on residents through a substantial increase of expenditures on food and other commodities, as most supplies are shipped by plane since the disruption. Based on an in-depth case study on the port and town of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, we investigate the influence of transportation system on a remote community. The Churchill railway was or is still under fierce discussion, but not much related academic work has been done so far. We nonetheless knew it was a fresh topic, so we went there with a presumed research question which was changed and adapted to the real situation. Before we went there, we only had one connection and a good number of participants were needed to be found and interviewed within 2 weeks as staying in Churchill is expensive. Here we elaborate how the stage was set for the research, the methodological challenges we faced, how we addressed and overcame those challenges, and the opportunities that were subsequently presented to the research team during the project
