Summary "No one will question the paramount importance of the subjects discussed in this volume. I have aimed to throw light upon them, by tracing out their connections with the element of freedom. Of the measure of my success, let the philosophical and candid reader be the judge. I give this volume as a contribution to philosophy, and to the moral and immortal interests of man. If I have followed the strict method of the one, I hope I have manifested no less, a hearty love for the other. This volume comprises the fifth and sixth divisions of my original plan, announced in the Introduction to my Review of Edwards. Although my conclusions may be rejected by many, still I will not have failed in a good result, even in respect to them, if my lucubrations shall serve in any measure to awaken, or to increase, in them, a spirit of research with respect to these subjects"--Preface.
