Summary Michael Mosley has set himself a truly ambitious goal: he wants to live longer, stay younger and lose weight in the bargain - all whilst making as few changes as possible to his lifestyle along the way.In Eat, Fast and Live Longer, Michael discovers the powerful new science behind the ancient idea of fasting, and he thinks he has found a way of doing it that still allows him to enjoy his food.It sounds too good to be true. So Michael decides to take a road trip across the United States to investigate how a little hunger can make one younger. First up, he samples the scientifically well-established regime of calorie restriction, where someone eats 25% less than normal every day. But Michael can't bear the thought of such a strict diet for the rest of his life. One scientist decides that what Michael's body might need is a short, sharp shock - a four day, 50 calories fast. His theory is that periodic extreme fasting like this lowers levels of a hormone strongly linked to general ageing, diabetes and several cancers.Michael still finds this regime too tough to achieve on a regular basis so his next stop is the University of Chicago. Here he discovers a revelation. A scientist is trialling a whole new way of looking at fasting. It's called Alternate Day Fasting and it is everything Michael's been searching for - a way to fast himself younger but with a free pass every other day to eat exactly what he wants.
