Summary Archival data can be used for statistical analysis by transforming them into categorical variables using systematic coding rules. First, categorical variables are recorded as sets of dummy variables. Second, when there are variables at different levels of units, multilevel analysis is useful. This case study demonstrates the utility of these two methods by examining whether court decisions are biased in favor of certain groups or ideas
