Reginald Markham (alias Rex Tester) was a member of the 39th Battalion, a militia battalion which played a large part in halting the Japanese advance along the Kokoda Trail in July and August 1942. Between 1996 and 2004 he was chairman of the Education Committee of the Kokoda Committee, later the NSW Branch of the Battle for Australia Committee, active in securing the proclamation in 2008 of an annual Battle for Australia Day each September.
