Summary 2012 is the National Year of Reading, and for the next six Tuesday nights, lovers of books and reading are going to be treated to a series of specials presented by Jennifer Byrne. In the first of this series of specials, Jennifer is delving into the 'dark places' of literature - the world of crime fiction. The success of Steig Larsen and his Millennium Trilogy has shifted the focus in recent times to Scandinavian crime. In other parts of the world, crime is slowly scaling the once impregnable walls of literary taste. Here in Australia, Peter Temple won the 2011 Miles Franklin Award for his book Truth. While James Lee Burke and other American crime writers are finally being taken seriously by the literary critics.The guest panellists are some of the most vital writers in the field and have the perfect vantage point to look at recent developments in crime fiction.One-time footballer, pop star and author Jo Nesbo is one of the best-selling crime writers working today. He's won a legion of fans the world over with his Detective Harry Hole series, the latest being Phantom. Malla Nunn grew up in Swaziland and her novels A Beautiful Place to Die and Let The Dead Lie explore life in 1950s South Africa during Apartheid. Michel Robotham straddles crime and psychological thriller in his seven novels, the latest being The Wreckage. Leigh Redhead is the creator of stripper by night/private investigator by day, Simone Hirsch who is the driving force in the books Peepshow and Thrill City.
