Summary |
Through the eyes of Alexander Stille, journalist and author of the groundbreaking book Excellant Cadavers: The Mafia and the Death of the First Italian Republic, this documentary goes to Sicily to investigate the ongoing power of the mafia and the relationship between Cosa Nostra and the politicians of the day. Stille interviews magistrates, researches archival footage and enlists the help of his friend Letizia Battaglia, a famous photographer and activist against the mafia who contributes some exceptional photographic evidence from the scene of the assassination of magistrates Falcone and Borsellino. The anti-mafia magistrates were targeted by Cosa Nostra for bringing to justice a large number of Mafiosi and big mafia bosses in a series of maxi-trials. Stille looks at how the magistrates' deaths outraged Sicily and triggered such a strong reaction in the public opinion that the State decided to offer immunity to any Mafioso who turned witness for the prosecution, the same witness protection program advocated by Falcone and Borsellino |
