| Summary |
Emphasized here are methodological issues encountered in researching how two different management models, one centralized and the other decentralized (unit management), affected the experience of male inmates in two medium-security American state prisons. Unit management is employed in prisons, hospitals, and other organizations around the world. Hypotheses, extending a line of prison evaluation research and theoretically driven by humanistic branches of organization theory, were empirically tested. Methodological issues included the identification of two comparable prisons, gaining entry, soliciting respondents, choosing and pretesting a survey, and coding the data. In general, I hypothesized that unit management would positively affect inmate safety and security, quality of life, and services and programs. Mixed results were obtained |
