Summary |
The Secret Policeman is a sensational expose ́of racism within the police force in Britain. BBC reporter Mark Daly went undercover in the Greater Manchester Police to discover whether racism lurked in their ranks. What he found was unpalatable, sending a wave of shock, dismay and disgust across the country. As a result of Daly's investigation, eight police officers have been suspended, four of whom have now tendered their resignations. In 1999 the Macpherson Report branded London's Metropolitan Police institutionally racist. The year before, the then chief constable of Greater Manchester Police took the bold step of admitting that his own force was institutionally racist. Daly went undercover using the latest hi-tech covert filming equipment to expose any of his fellow officers who held racist views or behaved in a racist manner. He gathered most of his material at the Police National Training Centre in Warrington, where trainees from 10 forces in the North West and Wales spend 15 weeks learning the job |
