Summary To the untrained eye, they are gelatinous blobs, drifting aimlessly on the ocean's currents. But jellyfish are among the most-feared and least-understood creatures on earth. Big enough to sink fishing boats, the Giant Nomura Jellyfish can grow to over two metres wide and weigh up to two-hundred kilograms. Rising sea temperatures have lead to massive increases in the Nomura population and swarms that previously amassed only once every four decades now strike Japan's shores yearly, wreaking havoc on coastal towns, fishing communities and cities. This documentary follows a fishing community that is being devastated by huge blooms of Nomura, along with a scientist who is racing against the clock to find a way to stop these monsters breeding. The Japanese government, wary of the threat these giant creatures pose to the country's multi-billion dollar fishing industry, has deployed three research ships capable of deploying kill-nets to shred the jellyfish before they reach the coast. However, the time this buys the local fisherman comes at a cost. This film questions whether global warming can be blamed for the spread of these gelatinous monsters and asks if scientists will ever be able to control the proliferation and impact of their blooms before they take over our oceans.
