Summary This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson chats to renowned architect Glenn Murcutt. In 2002, Murcutt became the first Australian to win the Pritzker Prize, the world's most prestigious architectural award. Murcutt is best known for his simple but complex houses, built from timber, corrugated iron, and louvred glass, which are all tailored to respond to their unique position in the Australian landscape. On Talking Heads, Murcutt discusses how his childhood in Papua New Guinea contributed to an architectural philosophy which is based on observation of the environment."We lived amongst the Kuka Kuka people, now known as the Manyamia. They killed a local German man ... they ate him and put his head on the airfield. So the senses were very, very acutely developed almost like in the way animals' senses are developed for survival. Observation has been my big learning tool."The other strong influence on the young Murcutt was his extremely demanding father, a property developer."He brought in Architectural Record and Architectural Forum. He would find a very interesting article, or a very interesting building, and he'd give it to me. Then he'd sit down and challenge me about it and say, "Why is it off the ground?" "Why is this building all glass?" You knew unless you got that answer you would have to read the article again! And so, all of a sudden it brought an interest about the underlying principles of buildings that I then began to find fascinating."Murcutt says he likes to work "below the radar", and is genuinely surprised by his own success. He describes himself as an intensely private person, whose anxiety increases with age despite his success
