Summary There are over sixty artworks on display at the Louvre Museum - sculptures, bas-reliefs, vessels, decorative objects, paintings and drawings - dating from 3000 BC to the 19th century, that tell the story of the long association between man and horse. The horse has always been associated with military and civilian power, prestige and status. Pharaohs, emperors, kings and great military men were immortalised in stone or on canvas astride their mounts or riding their chariots. Experts from different departments of the Louvre explain how the man/horse iconography and its symbolism have evolved from the dawn of time to the19th century.
