Summary "This two-part series marks a significant milestone in the evolution of western attitudes to indigenous civilisations culminating in the opening of the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris. For the first time what used to be referred to as primitive art, works from Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas, found mostly until now in dusty natural history museums, have been given an ultra modern home in the Musee du Quai Branly, on the Seine adjacent to the Eiffel Tower. The design of the museum and its ceilings, floors and facades have drawn heavily on the work of contemporary Australian Aboriginal artists. The first episode, Farewell Primitive, directed by Michel Viotte traces the evolution of western attitudes to non western indigenous cultures; one which has seen the view of the art of traditional societies change from being considered the naïve expressions of savages, through to being properly recognised as art. Using the artworks themselves, extensive archives and biographical stories the film moves through the historical phases from the outright destruction of indigenous civilisations, through the potential offered by the Enlightenment, the regression of social Darwinism through modernism and on to a new relationship of mutual respect. The second episode, Songlines To The Seine is directed by indigenous Australian director Julie Nimm This episode details the inspiration behind the Paris project. The Musee du Quai Branly's design was heavily influenced by architect Jean Nouvel's visits to Aboriginal Australia and key to the design was an interactive process of curating the work of eight individual artists from remote WA, Arnhem Land and suburban east coast cities. Their work has had a remarkable influence on the design and the physical layout of the museum and its exhibitions. "
