Summary This case study examines how the author drew on interviews in his research on football fans as political actors in Croatia. It discusses how interviews may be approached anthropologically, especially when researching topics with a political focus. First, a few brief details about the political context of the fieldwork are elaborated. Following this, the author discusses the differences between immersion in a context and fieldwork, and of how anthropologists and other social scientists might approach interviews differently. Drawing on his own experiences in conducting interviews with fans, the remainder of the case study examines considerations, and issues that might arise, during different phases of the interview process. They are considered in chronological order and include arranging interviews; choosing a setting; interviewees' awareness of and openness to the process; positionality, self-presentation, and finding common ground; difficult emotions; and finishing up
