By the early 1900s, many industrial cities in New England had thriving French-Canadian communities. In those "cultural ghettos," organized around the parish church and French schools, first-generation immigrants tried to recreate their lost homeland. Eking out a living on the margins of American society, they saw themselves as American French-Canadians."
