Summary |
In this case study, Bert discusses the many issues involved in designing and implementing a community-based mental aerobics program for older adults. These issues include conceptualizing the project, the recruitment and retaining over time of older adult volunteers, the design of the program itself and the choice of dependent measures, the dynamics of implementing the program, and translating our study's findings into terms older adult participants can understand and relate to as well as putting the study's findings into publishable form. Mental aerobics is a cognitively oriented intervention designed to improve older adults' perceptions of their cognitive ability as well as positively affect their performance. Findings support the conclusion that mental aerobics can be an effective intervention in improving older adults' affectivity, everyday task self-efficacy, and self-rated health. The impact of mental aerobics on fluid and crystallized skills was moderated by level of education. The subsequent provision of mental aerobics training to controls minimized the performance differences between the treatment and control conditions, as well as the moderating effect of level of education. These findings suggest that mental aerobics can be effectively used to enhance older adults' views of their skills, critical to efforts to maintain cognitive functioning into later life, although some older persons may benefit to a greater extent than others |
