Deforestation is a serious problem in temperate forests, such as those found in Washington state's Olympic Peninsula. Clear-cutting of old-growth evergreens can destroy the continuity of the forests, which are vital not only for their role in maintaining biological diversity, but also because of their role in taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
