Summary |
Dr. Stephen Thaler, an artificial neural network researcher, developed DABUS, a machine capable of generating ideas autonomously. For example, DABUS conceived of an idea for a food container. While applying for a patent for the food container, Dr Thaler encountered a problem. He could not claim to be the inventor of the food container, as he had not conceived of the idea. However, DABUS is not a legal person and thus it could not obtain the patent in its name. Could there be no patent right for the food container? Students are asked to explore the legal, moral, and economic aspects of the novel juncture, exemplified in the creation of the food container, in which artificial intelligence machines are now capable of autonomously generating ideas |
