Summary Disability is now understood as a complex and universal human phenomenon that manifests itself at the body, person, and social levels. This model has guided the revision of the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Functioning and Disability (ICIDH-2). Yet this approach faces an important challenge to its claim that it can offer a concept of disability applicable across languages and cultures. Is not the experience of disability unique to each individual, and made distinct by differences in the physical, social and cultural contexts in which people live? Indeed, as some have asked, is the search for a universal and transcultural common language for disability simply impossible, since disability and its social construction vary from society to society and from time to time? This book responds to this crucial challenge by presenting the results of an extensive, multi-country investigation into the cultural applicability of the model and concept of disability found in ICIDH-2. Using innovative ethnographic qualitative methods, this research initiative is part of a joint project conducted by WHO and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) aimed at developing disability assessment instruments for comparative statistical purposes and social policy. The results presented here provide an evidence-based argument for a universal model of disability as well as for the cultural applicability of an international common language of disability classification and measurement./ñ̮
