Summary |
NuPetCo was founded by its current chief executive officer (CEO), Brian Carol, along with his wife, the current chief operating officer (COO), Amy Carol. The privately held company is headquartered in Portland, Ore. The Carols began the company several years after losing Chase, their beloved terrier, to heart disease at age 6. Brian and Amy worked closely with Chase's veterinarian, Dr. Sue Caveli, to design a plant-based, meat-alternative diet that is rich in protein, whole grains, vitamins, and minerals, and low in sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat. In 2014, the Carols first mentioned the idea of a meat-alternative pet food to Caveli, and she was intrigued. She was familiar with the academic studies that provided promising evidence of the health benefits of a plant-based diet for people but was not aware of any studies conducted on dogs or cats. Caveli also noted that the benefits of plant-based food reached beyond the consuming pets' health; the use of plant-based ingredients instead of beef and poultry were significantly associated with decreased carbon emissions and waste by-products |
