"The aim of this book is concerned with the efforts of the eighteenth century to establish an empirical basis for the study of man and society. Attention is focused on a group of Scottish writers of moral philosophy who were absorbed in that empirical enterprise, even though they gave expression to "mixed modes of thought." The author contends that the choice of this Scottish group can be justified.
