Summary 21ST CENTURY GULAGWhat's really going on in Russia's toughest jails? A special investigation to be screened on Tuesday's Dateline reveals that little has changed in the country's notorious prisons since the days of Stalin's gulags. Former prisoners and human rights activists risk their own freedom to speak out about the violence and torture going on behind the razor wire. While President Putin denies it's happening, Dateline's story reveals leaked videos of prisoners being attacked as soon as they enter the jails. And broken families reveal the extortion that follows, as they're pressured to pay a high price financially and emotionally for the protection of their loved ones behind bars. With graphic testimony that harks back to the dark days of Stalin and concentration camps, it's a look at a side of 21st Century Russia that the authorities don't want us to see.FREE THE BEARSWhen Perth grandmother Mary Hutton saw a TV report on the mistreatment of bears in Asia, she simply couldn't stand aside and let it continue. It was then that the idea of Free The Bears was born, and Mary has been working tirelessly to save the animals ever since. Now, 20 years on from the moment that changed her life, Dateline's David Brill joins Mary in Cambodia to see what she's achieved. The stories of how the bears come into her care are depressing... bile farming, deforestation, trafficking or abuse. But her tight-knit team nurses them back to health and does its bit to educate the next generation about animal rights.FINDING FARAHDateline's report on the rising number of Iraqi children born with severe deformities, Iraq's Deadly Legacy, was one of our most powerful of 2010, winning awards and gathering interest worldwide. But it was the personal story of one of the severely ill children that particularly captured the heart of video journalist Fouad Hady. Farah had a badly deformed face, no eyelids and seemingly little chance of a normal life, so what became of her? Fouad returns to Iraq on Tuesday's Dateline to find Farah. She's been lucky in many ways... living in a caring orphanage, and looking much better thanks to cosmetic surgery. But without specialist treatment outside Iraq, her eyesight will be lost, and so begins a battle against red tape to get her the treatment she needs. Can the politicians see the way ahead to give Farah a brighter future?
