Summary Adelaide Zoo's Karta is an orangutan who doesn't like a lot of attention, but that is exactly what she is getting. She is pregnant. The 30-year-old Sumatran orangutan has previously given birth to four babies at Adelaide Zoo but all of them have died within days, and Karta is battling the stigma of being labelled 'a bad mother'.For the zoo the stakes are high. The Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered in the wild. Karta and the baby's father, Kluet, are the most important genetic pairing in Australasia. A baby from this pair will be an important addition to an insurance population as well as an ambassador for the species. But if the outcome for Karta's next baby is to be different, the zoo needs answers. The zoo keepers need to know why her babies are not surviving and how they can help.As we wait for the birth, the extraordinary journey that led Jodie Ellen, Specialist Primate Zoo Keeper, to the theory that Karta is unable to effectively breast feed her babies, is revealed. It's a story that takes Jodie across the country to the Perth Zoo which leads to the Denver Zoo in the US and ultimately provides a solution for Karta's possible feeding problem.Follow Karta's zoo keepers behind the scenes as they prepare for her very important baby.PRODUCTION DETAILS:GREAT EXPECTATIONS is produced by ABC TV (SA).
