Summary BINDI COLEPhotographer Bindi Cole is not one to embrace stereotypes. Her latest exhibition, Sistagirls, provides an insight into lives rarely seen by those not living them: those of the Tiwi Islands' small group of sistagirls, born men but identifying as women. This transgender status often sees them marginalised, but in Bindi Cole's photographs, they can revel in their identities and lifestyles. "There is an immediate interest in people in this community of Sistagirls", she tells video journalist Allan Clarke. "It's such a unique phenomenon such a unique insight into Aboriginal culture that really is quite removed from the stereotype of Aboriginal people". Join Living Black as we discover what drives Bindi Cole to change perceptions through art.STARTING EARLYEarly childhood education is vital to the development of young children. In Sydney's west, a preschool has developed an award winning program that's providing better access to education for Aboriginal families. Video journalist Kris Flanders joined the kids on the school bus and discovered how this preschool is supporting low income Indigenous families.FROM THE HEARTFor singer-songwriter Leah Flanagan, the release of her first album, Nirvana Nights, is an opportunity to open up to others. "The new album...is basically about songs about my home, songs about myself, people that I care about, people that sometimes annoy me. It's got a bit of everything, but most of all it's very much from my perspective and you know just songs from the heart", she tells Living Black. Made with the help of a Commonwealth Government grant and named after a Darwin haven for struggling artists, the release of the album has seen this 26-year-old on the promotional circuit in the hopes others will appreciate her songs and her message.
