Summary |
This 1987 revision of the Casebook on Ethical Principles of Psychologists is the latest in a series of casebooks developed over time to illustrate the applications of the ethics code of the American Psychological Association (APA) |
|
Because the original code was data based, it soon became apparent to the APA governance structure that the pool of cases that had been adjudicated over time by the APA Ethics Committee would provide a useful data base for the community of psychologists, providing data on both the serviceability and fairness of the code. This Casebook and its predecessors have been developed with that focus clearly in mind. Each of the cases in this Casebook is drawn from the files of the APA Ethics Committee, and they are carefully disguised versions of actual decisions made by the Committee, the APA governance group charged with both overseeing the code and its enforcement. Each case describes the background of the complaint, how the case was adjudicated, and what sanctions, if any, were invoked. It is expected that this Casebook, like earlier ones, would furnish precedents for the Association, for future APA Ethics Committees, and for state and local ethics committees of psychologists; in addition, it would not only continue to serve an educative function for the profession as a whole but also document the efforts of the Association to police its own house.
