SAGE Research Methods. Cases
Summary This case describes a qualitative study, using focus groups, to examine the psycho-social well-being of a group of students drawn from a small Type 11 Government school located in a poor fishing community on the Western coast of Sri Lanka. Data were collected during a period of 6 weeks through focus groups and impromptu shared discussions with students, teachers, parents, and the administrators of the school. This case focuses on the use of focus group discussions within a participatory approach to research and development. The research practicalities, design, methods in action, and lessons learned are discussed. The case study illustrates the application of qualitative methods, specifically focus groups, within a unique cultural context and the experiences of two researchers, one from Sri Lanka and one from the United States
