THE POLITICS OF RAPEThe recent spate of violent rapes and sex attacks in India has shocked the world, but it's been the subsequent reaction of authorities that's proved just as shocking for many. On Tuesday's Dateline, Amos Roberts investigates two rape cases that turned into political scandals. Suzette Jordan decided to speak out about her gang rape attack after being mocked by police and becoming the target of a vicious smear campaign by senior politicians. She challenges the mentality of those in power who seek to blame the victim. Amos also investigates the story of a teenage rape victim who died in mysterious circumstances after falsely accusing two men of setting her on fire - men who have now spent more than three months in jail. Has the balance of justice turned far enough in favour of the victims? Or could it even have turned too far? EGYPT'S TOMB RAIDERSEgypt's economy has long relied on tourism, but the recent violent unrest has seen the stream of visitors almost completely dry up. Instead, attractions such as the Pyramids are seeing some much more unwelcome visitors... thieves looting the historic sites of their treasures. On Tuesday's Dateline, Aidan Hartley travels with archaeologist Monica Hanna, as she tries to fight back against the tomb raiders. With the government's attention on Cairo, lawlessness prevails in some areas and she says looters are able to plunder the sites virtually unhindered. But Aidan's story also shows the plight of ordinary Egyptians who used to rely on tourism for their livelihood. Now, not only are they facing financial ruin, it's unclear what will be left of the country's ancient heritage when the tourists return |
