Summary "The travelling photographer Thomas Washbourne published a series of stereoscopic views of Melbourne and surrounding areas (including Geelong) in the late 1860's. The weathered rock formations in this photograph are extremely similar to those found near Melbourne at both Point Lonsdale and Cape Schank. Based on comparison with the subject matter and mounts of three of his stereoscopic views of rock formations at Point Lonsdale (near the entrance to Port Phillip Bay) held in the SLV, it seems highly likely that this image is one of Washbourne's views of Victorian scenery taken at Point Lonsdale. Original copies of this view were obviously sold internationally to the New York firm of Sperry." -- sellers blurb
