Summary The coast; it's easy to find, just head to the ocean and stop before you get wet! But have you ever wondered what science you can find there? Well we sure have! Join Dr Rob, on location this week, as he coasts through the science of mangroves, jet boarding, fiddler crabs and even a cliff rescue!101The coast is pretty easy to find, but it can be very different depending on where in Australia you are. Dr Rob takes us through all the different coastal terrain. COAST EXPERIMENTJessica, Onyx, Blake and Giorgia from Southport State High School dig themselves into the science of sandcastle making. The junior scientists experiment with a few different ways to build sand castles, while protecting them from the waves.JETBOARDERYou have probably seen surfing and jet skiing at the coast, but what about jetboarding? Eloise and Zoe introduce us to jetboards, a surf board with a jet engine, and show us how these very cool boards work. SAND RECYCLINGBeaches seem pretty simple; after all it's just sand and water. But there can be a lot more to them. Rob Tucker from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources shows us how and why sand is moved around the beach and the machinery that does the heavy lifting. MANGROVESMangrove forests are found around many of the world's tropical and subtropical coasts, including Australia. Mangrove Ecologist, Dr Norm Duke from James Cook University, takes us into a Mangrove forest and shows us some of the research he has been doing on the animal and plant species in these ecosystems. CLIFF RESCUEWhile coasts can be a lot of fun, sometimes they can be quite dangerous. Coastal cliffs can be slippery and deceptive, but luckily there are people like Trevor Arnold from the South Australian State Emergency Services who are experts at rescuing people on cliffs. Trevor and his team take us through a couple of the techniques used in cliff rescues. And don't forget that the ordinary always becomes extraordinary, when under the SCOPE
