À 90% de confession musulmane, le Sénégal ne comptant qu'à peine 8% de chrétiens; c'est pourtant bien un pèlerinage catholique qui se déroule chaque année à Popenguine. Venus de toute l'Afrique de l'Ouest près de 100.000 pèlerins sont attendus cette année lors du 125e pèlerinage marial dédié à l'adoration de la Vierge Noire. Durant les 8 jours qui précèdent le week-end de la Pentecôte, une énergie folle est déployée par les habitants du village pour que tout soit prêt à temps. C'est ainsi qu'un petit village abritant 5.000 personnes à l'année ouvre ses portes à la vague du pèlerinage catholique, c'est aussi ainsi que musulmans et chrétiens confondus préparent ensemble une fête qui les rassemble. Les religions ne doivent en aucun cas être un motif de division. At 90% of the population of Muslim faith, Senegal only has barely 8% of Christians; it is nevertheless a Catholic pilgrimage that takes place every year in Popenguine. Coming from all over West Africa, nearly 100,000 pilgrims are expected this year during the 125th Marian pilgrimage dedicated to the adoration of the Black Virgin. During the 8 days preceding the Pentecost weekend, a mad energy is deployed by the inhabitants of the village so that everything is ready in time.
