The object of this series is to provide studies of individual novels, plays and groups of poems and essays which are known to be widely read. The emphasis is on clarification and evaluation, biographical and historical facts. The special merit of Kenneth Muir's study of Hamlet is that he sees it always as a play, and not as a-psychological treatise, although, indeed, he cannot avoid the use of psychological terms in his estimate of Hamlet's character. Most of his book is a close analysis of the action and the characters, coupled with careful appraisal of previous interpretations ...
