[Episode 1.] Fascism in colour - Seizure of power -- [episode 2.] Fascism in colour - Mussolini in power
Summary A two-part film on Benito Mussolini and fascism, presented for the first time in colour. It is the story of fascism's violent roots, and its dream of restoring the glories of the Roman Empire. Profiles Mussolini as the world's first fascist dictator, and his influence. His glorification of violence inspired Hitler. When he used politcal theatre, Hitler imitated him. It is about fascist Italy's military disasters and its humliating end. Episode one is about how Mussolini seized power through systematic intimidation, violence and murder. Yet the Fascists were supported by the Italian monarchy, the Vatican and some world leaders, amongst whom was Winston Churchill. Pope Pious Xl, said Mussolini was sent by 'Divine Providence'. While Winston Churchill called him the 'Roman Genius'
Episode two is about Mussolini in power, as the world's first fascist prime minister. It is a tale of mass adulation; of dreams of empire; of a disastrous alliance with Hitler; of military failure, ignominious death and destruction - a legacy of World War Two. A first-hand personal account of Mussolini's ambitions by Galeazzo Ciano, Foreign Minister and Mussolini's son-in-law. Ciano witnessed the Fascist dictator's cowardice in his dealings with Hitler. Interweaves personal narratives with archival footage to tell the story of Mussolini and fascism
