Summary Lawrence Stenhouse was one of the most distinguished, original and influential educationalists of his generation. Although he died in 1982 his work on curriculum, pedagogy and educational research can still be traced into the twenty-first century and continues to be a counterbalance to instrumental and technocratic thinking in education. In 1962 he gave a lecture at the University of Oslo that grappled with what he called a conceptual framework that related the sociology of the classroom to the sociology of the curriculum and their relation to the problem of general and specialist education. Taking issue with the traditional sociological perspective that education was concerned with the transmission of culture, Stenhouse began to articulate a view of the classroom as a cultural laboratory and cultures as resources for the development of independence, individuality and creativity, themes that were to reverberate throughout his work for the rest of his life. These were themes he returned to in "Culture and Education," which in many respects sets the scene for Stenhouse's greatest achievement, the Humanities Curriculum Project (HCP). In this book, renowned educationalists describe Stenhouse's contribution to education, explore the contemporary relevance of his thinking and bring his work and legacy to the attention of a wide range of students, teachers, teacher educators, and others involved in education
