Series Compass: Whatever Happened To ; Series 29, Episode 11
Summary In this six-part series, Compass revisits influential religious and social movements in Australia's recent past from Sunday Schools to the Maharishi, from the RSL to Women's Lib. Some are grounded in powerful spiritual beliefs, others espouse philosophies and values that have changed lives and left a lasting legacy. In this episode, Compass takes a look at what happened to the Maharishi. In the 1960's, Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced Transcendental Meditation to the world, spreading his meditation technique to Australia and setting up centres in Melbourne and Sydney. Among his most famous followers were The Beatles, who went to India to meet their spiritual guru. Some of Maharishi's claims have been controversial - that meditation can bring world peace and that practising TM can result in levitation and yogic flying. Despite this, over 6 million people are still learning and using his techniques in centres around the world. In Australia, some practitioners of this ancient Indian meditation technique were there at the beginning and COMPASS explores what drew them to the Maharishi, how their lives have changed and the legacy of this giggling guru.
