When Grub Street: Studies in a Subculture was published in 1972, it met with a very generous reception and some helpful reviews; however, one criticisim was made that it attempted to cover too much ground. Professor Rogers has now produced a more economical and concentrated text consisting of the sections most directly concerned with the literary masterpieces exploring the Grub Street milieu, above all, The Duncaid and A Tale of a Tub. The book is thus organized more tightly to show the presence and use of London imagery in the work of Pope and Swift especially, and should be of interest to students of social history, London life, and seventeenth- and eighteenth-century urban developments as well as to readers of Augustan literature. --From cover |
